From the age of 6 months, babies can be fed with milk and cereal formula. This should provide children with sufficient dietary fibre, calcium and protein for a good development. However, it is possible that the formula can contain critical substances that are harmful to health.
Unwanted substances discovered in baby formula
- Stiftung Warentest has tested 19 milk and cereal formula products for undesirable substances – one of these undesirable substances is chlorate. The salt of chloric acid is a by-product of the use of chlorine-containing chemicals for cleaning and disinfection and can lead to inhibited iodine absorption when absorbed.
- For example, the rice processed in a rice pulp can be contaminated with arsenic. Arsenic is a semi-metal which occurs naturally in the soil and is thus absorbed by rice plants. According to a statement by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (statement no. 017/2015 of the BfR dated 6 February 2014), organic arsenic can be carcinogenic. For this reason, there are statutory limits for arsenic contamination in rice products which must not be exceeded.
- In addition, 3-MCPD esters were determined in milk cereal porridge. 3-MCPD (3-monochloropropanediol) is an undesirable substance that can arise during the refining of vegetable oils and has a harmful potential.
- Overall, the test showed that only three of the 19 products tested were rated good.
